What it means to be a hair extension specialist.

Having specialised in hair extensions and hair replacement for over 13 years, I’ve really seen it all. Unfortunately, in Australia, there is no standard when it comes to hair extensions, which basically means anyone can do them. Whether you’re an accountant looking for a career change or a teenager wanting to alter her look, you can go online, watch a tutorial and start applying hair extensions. Not only can anyone offer hair extensions as a service, but they can charge a hefty price, too. That’s rather frightening.

Another misconception is that all hairdressers can apply hair extensions. Whilst they are likely to install extensions more effectively than someone not trained in hair care, hairdressers are usually colour technicians, stylists or cutting specialists. Even though hair extensions and hairdressing fall in the closest category, there is a huge difference when it comes really understanding the intricacies of hair extensions. This includes education, applications, cutting, blending and colouring. Put simply, all of the rules change when you’re dealing with hair extensions as opposed to natural hair.

Why we do these things to ourselves is beyond me, ladies. Understanding how dangerous it can be to have your hair extensions applied by someone who doesn’t specialise in them – permanent hair loss, scarring, matting, tangling and a huge waste of your hard earned cash. For these reasons, you need to make sure you’re going to someone that’s highly experienced and knows what they are talking about.

At Hair With Envy we pride ourselves on being one of the very few hair extension specialists in the country. We offer extensive training to all of our staff, which is performed in salon (full-time), with our team only performing a full installation service unsupervised after their first year of training. Our method is rare, safe and specialised to ensure our clients are receiving the highest quality of service and techniques available.

Information about Hair Qualities

Russian Wefts

Hello Ladies!

It has been quite a while since I’ve been able to upload a blog post. We have been super busy building the business and working on our new online store! I’m sorry for the delay but better late than never!

Today I’m going to talk about Hair Qualities. It is a common misunderstanding of how hair extension qualities differ  so I thought I would break it down for everyone.

Hair quality is determined by its country of Origin. Knowing the natural form of the hair should give you an idea of the process it undergoes before you have it applied to your head.

Beautiful Virgin Russian Hair is rare and super expensive. Russian hair is normally naturally light/fair in colour and is sold in its purest form (untouched, uncoloured, unprocessed). It can be bleached, does NOT come in a packet and can cost up to $3000-$4000 for a full head installation. The hair can last over a year and is completely tangle free for that entire time. You can also use protein based hair products on this hair type.

In today’s market companies sell their hair as Russian (in a packet) to make it more appealing to the consumer. THIS HAIR IS NOT RUSSIAN. So be sure what you are getting before you buy.

Beautiful authentic Virgin South American Hair is more available but naturally dark brown to black in colour. For brunette clients this hair is amazing. It  is also sold in its purest form (untouched, uncoloured, unprocessed) and can be bleached, protein based hair products can be used on it and can usually last the client over 12 months without being replaced… AND remains tangle free for the entire time. This hair quality and is available from our online store and in our salon 🙂

In today’s market companies sell their hair as South American (in a packet or in a ponytail). This hair is a tricky one as suppliers are good selling it off without it being authentic. The best way to test if it’s actually Virgin and not processed is by bleaching it. If it has a silky outer layer which doesn’t feel natural… It’s probably fake!

Cuticle hair is a new type of hair quality which has been developed because of the high demand for good quality hair types. Virgin
VCH#18 - 2hair (unless it is Russian which costs a fortune) usually comes in naturally dark colours so a development of cuticle aligned and intact hair qualities has been developed. The process the hair undergoes (especially for lighter colours) is gentle ensuring the cuticle is still intact which means it is free from tangling and should behave just like your natural hair.

We love this new hair quality and is available from our online store and in our salon 🙂

Oh the trickiest of them all! Europe is such a big part of the world so where does it come from? WHO KNOWS!

I’ve researched and asked the question and I can never get a consistent answer. It’s almost like these wholesalers don’t even know the answer themselves. Russia, China, India are the 3 main answers  and in come cases I’ve been told it’s a mix of them all.

Funny how none of those countries are in Europe…

European hair is again, just a name to make the hair seem more appealing to the consumer. It’s definitely not Russian because as we already know it comes in a packet so lets go with  China or India. This hair quality CANNOT be bleached as it has already undergone  processing before it’s available to us to be worn.

eurotextSo let’s talk about the processed hair types as a whole. This includes European, Indian and Chinese hair.

Asian and Indian people have naturally black/dark brown hair. It is also very common that these nationalities have course hair (Asian is usually straight and Indian is usually on the wavy side)

To get these hair qualities to become blonde, straight and silky the hair needs to be acid washed, the cuticle is stripped, the hair is toned/coloured with a fabric dye, permed straight and then silicone coated to give a cosmetic silky result. Once the hair is washed a few times, the silky silicone outer layer washes away and you a left with acid washed hair which is extremely difficult to brush, style and wear. Usual life spans of this hair is anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months.

It can cost anywhere from $200 – $1500 depending on what the salon decides to charge you. We have come across so many ridiculous price tags so unfortunately as a consumer it is really hard to decide who to use. In this instance and in this industry you don’t always get what you pay for so PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH. You need to know what you are paying for so,  ask questions, read reviews and SHOP AROUND!!

The dangers of Tape Hair Extensions

Hello Ladies!

So this is an article I’ve written about Tape Hair Extensions. This method seems to be one of the most popular hair extension applications around at the moment but after reading this article you will see why you need to steer clear of them.

Wearing tape extensions? Know someone who does? Thinking about getting some?

One particular application that has crazed the industry and it’s clientele are Tape Hair Extensions. They are worn by a lot of girls because of their inexpensive price tag and quick application time. One thing about this method is that there is next to no training required to apply them and a growing number of girls are starting their own little hair extension businesses with no real experience, and in some cases friends are applying these to each other. They simply buy the hair online or from a supplier and charge top dollar to whoever will pay.

Below are examples of some of my new clients that have come to see me over the last 6 months for hair extension consultations. These clients had been all wearing tape extensions and were completely unaware of the damage they had caused until I showed them.

alopecia2The most common side affects caused by wrongly applied hair extensions is what the hair loss industry call traction alopecia:

Traction alopecia is hair loss that is caused by long term hair pulling and breakage due to very tight hair braiding, weaves, hair bonds or cornrows continually pulling at the hair root. If wrongly applied hair extensions are continually worn and the tension on your hair is not regularly alleviated, scarring can occur as well as permanent hair loss, leaving the wearer with a less then desirable appearance they’ll be forced to deal with for their rest of their lives.

Like I mentioned earlier. These clients had no idea of the damage that was done. Their “Hair Extension Technician” decided it was best not to tell them, but also decided charge them (up to $400) every time they went back for their re-installation services. They obviously saw the damage they had caused, but simple removed the extensions from the damaged area and re-applied them elsewhere, only to potentially cause the same damage in an other area on the scalp.

(hair extensions need to be reinstalled every 6-8 weeks to keep your natural hair and hair extensions healthy. This service is an essential part of every permanent hair extension maintenance program)

These tape extensions are not suitable for all hair types. ESPECIALLY FINE HAIR. These scars are permanent, and if they were to continue wearing these extensions they would most likely end up wearing a wig for the rest of their life.

If you have experienced this type of hair loss from your hair extension salon melbourne then I recommend they be removed immediately. If your wearing taped in extensions or any other type and your concerned about any damage they may be causing then feel free to contact me on 414184014 or email for a free scalp analysis.

There are hair extension applications which don’t have these side affects, and they don’t have to break the bank. It’s important to do your research and ensure your getting them done by a trained professional with plenty of experience.

If anyone has any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me.
